“He Finally Heard the World Clearly” – Susan’s Journey with Her Son Adam

Susan always knew her son Adam was bright. From the outside, he seemed like an average student: two Bs every year—always in math and grammar. But something didn’t add up. His spelling was inconsistent, his penmanship lagged far behind, and he often appeared exhausted by mid-morning at school.

“He was only in the second lesson, and it already looked like he was half asleep,” Susan recalls. “Teachers said he was distracted and inattentive, yet he always knew the answers when asked directly. The disconnect just didn’t make sense.”

“It Was Like He Woke Up After a Deep Sleep” – A Father’s Story About His Son’s Breakthrough

When Matthew and his 6-year-old son Leo began their journey to uncover the cause of Leo’s speech difficulties, they had already seen everyone. Speech therapists, psychologists, neurologists, ENT specialists—even a gastroenterologist. Yet after all the consultations, testing, and professional opinions, they still had no clear answers.

Leo could barely form words. His speech sounded more like animalistic vocalizations than language, and despite showing a strong desire to communicate, he simply couldn’t express himself verbally. His hearing was clinically “perfect,” and yet he didn’t seem to process spoken language. His behavior became more physical, more intense – his frustration unspoken but palpable.

Then, by chance, Matthew discovered a different perspective.

After assessments with Beata Fazekas Intelisten Expert, it became clear: Leo had hyperacusis—extremely sensitive hearing—and possibly even clairaudient tendencies. In Matthew’s words, “He could hear almost everything—even the electric current running inside the walls. Sounds echoed in his head like a ringing bell. It was just too much.”

Leo’s brain was overwhelmed with information. He couldn’t filter what mattered from what didn’t. The end of words echoed in his mind, making speech comprehension nearly impossible. What he needed wasn’t more speech therapy – but a way to retrain his auditory processing.

And so they began Intelisten training. With carefully adapted music – modified to omit or emphasize specific frequencies—Leo’s brain was gently taught how to sort useful sounds from noise.

The family started during the summer break to give Leo time and space at home. After an initial adjustment period, something miraculous happened.

“It was like our son woke up from a deep sleep.”

Suddenly, he understood words—and he began to speak. Only then could the speech therapist truly begin meaningful work with him. Though the road was still long—Leo had six years of language to catch up on—he made extraordinary progress.

Today, Leo is 11. He reads, recites poetry, and attends a bilingual school. While some pronunciation remains unique, every sound is now present. And as Matthew proudly says, “He’s only been learning Hungarian for five years.”

Despite professionals once suggesting autism or intellectual delay, Matthew and his family always knew: Leo wasn’t broken. He was simply overwhelmed by a world that was too loud, too detailed, too unfiltered.

“If we hadn’t found Beata, he’d probably be in a special school – and we wouldn’t be having real conversations with our son today.”

Matthew shares their story not only out of deep gratitude, but also to spread awareness: overhearing is real, and there is help – without medication or surgery.

“From Silence to Storytelling” – One Mother’s Journey with Her Son’s Sound Sensitivity

When Sophie first brought her four-year-old son Tommy to the Intelisten program, they were navigating a world of uncertainty. Tommy, a bright and sensitive little boy, was almost entirely nonverbal—using no more than 6 to 8 words. His sleep was disrupted by frequent awakenings and crying, and his days were filled with emotional and behavioral challenges. After more than two years of various tests and interventions, progress had been slow, and hope was wearing thin.

But that all began to shift after one key decision.

“Initially, we were skeptical,” Sophie admits. “But we had nothing to lose, and everything to gain.” Under the guidance of Beata, they completed a comprehensive assessment and received customized audio training tailored to Tommy’s needs. Though the family had hoped to join a group program, they completed the sessions at home, and it worked beautifully.

To their surprise, noticeable changes began during the training itself.

“I Never Thought We’d See Results This Quickly” – A Kindergarten Teacher Mom Shares Her Story

Julia, a dedicated kindergarten teacher and mother of two boys — Mark and Jason — has a deep understanding of child development. Her dual perspective as both an educator and a parent gives her valuable insight into how auditory sensitivity can affect a child’s daily life.

As Mark approached his sixth birthday, his parents grew concerned about his behavioral challenges and persistent speech errors. He often misheard words, frequently asked for repetitions, and showed frustration in noisy environments. That’s when they turned to Intelisten for support.

19-year-old woman with Hyperacusis

I am on day 7 of listening training. I feel a change in that the subtler noises (e.g. clicking, swishing, munching, etc.) that used to make me irritated very quickly, now don’t cause me to feel like that, and I don’t even feel like they’re poking a needle in my ears. I still don’t like these noises, but I can tolerate them much more easily. 🙂

Also, my tinnitus used to be as if not only my ears but my whole head was buzzing, and after the first treatment it was as if something had been turned off and there was silence in my head. It’s like there’s a fog around my brain and the ringing in my ears is only in my ears. 🙂

Because of this, I can turn it off much easier now. Also, unfortunately, I get dizzy very easily when I stand up suddenly, in which case my whole head started throbbing before and I heard a rustling in my ears as my heart beats strongly. Since the treatment, this rustling stopped and I could only feel my heartbeat in my chest.

So far I have noticed these, but I am curious whether after the treatment, e.g. how well will I tolerate the street noise? 🙂

Persistent headache in a 15-year-old boy

“My complaints completely disappeared on the 6th day of the training, and this condition has lasted ever since.”

My name is David, I am 15 years old. My problems started a year and a half ago. At first I had a mild headache, my GP suspected puberty and recommended pain relief. These made my life much easier for a few weeks, but I had to take the medicine almost every day, because the headache increased. My family and I went to the doctor again to find a sustainable and effective solution in the long term. Several months of examination began – cardiology, neurology, MR, ultrasound, X-ray, … –  but unfortunately none of them found the cause behind the headache.

My mother accidentally found information about hypersensitive hearing, and it’s true that I didn’t have any complaints about it at school, but when I was a small child, there were many things in my life that are typical for people with hypersensitive hearing.

We performed the necessary assessment and the result supported hypersensitive hearing. Since the training can’t hurt, we decided to give it a chance, even if it doesn’t cause significant changes, since we didn’t see any other solution that could work for me.

Finally, I completed the 10-day training at home in December 2023, it was especially pleasant to be able to choose the music myself. By the way, the filtered music was a bit strange, as if I had heard the sounds more muted, under water, but it was not unpleasant at all.

On the sixth day of the training, I did not wake up in the morning with a headache and did not need to take medicine. The intense headache hasn’t returned since then, and my everyday life has become much easier and more comfortable.
The customer service was very efficient, when I had a question they helped me immediately.

I’m so glad we found this listening training, it was worth every minute.
